The IRS and the Treasury Department launched their new website today allowing those who do not normally file tax returns to submit their information in order to receive an economic impact payment.
Economic impact payments will be distributed automatically to eligible taxpayers who filed a 2019 or 2018 tax return, as well as those receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits and Railroad Retirement benefits. For those who don’t normally file a tax return, the new tool is a simple, secure web form that takes only a few minutes to complete.
Those who should use the new Non-filers tool include:
Social Security, SSDI, Supplemental Security Income, and Railroad Retirement beneficiaries with qualifying dependent children under the age of 17.The main payment will come automatically, the $500 per child will not.
People under the income requirements for filing a tax return. In 2019, this includes single filers under $12,200 and married couples making less than $24,400.
Veterans and their beneficiaries.Veterans and their beneficiaries who receive Compensation and Pension benefit payments will receive their Economic Impact Payments automatically, but coordination between the VA and the IRS will take some time. The Treasury encourages those with internet access to provide this information to expedite their payment.
Students and others as necessary. If you can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return, you are not eligible for an economic impact payment.
The web tool is based on Free File Fillable Forms, which are free, secure products provided by the IRS.
You will need to provide:
Full name
Date of birth
Valid Social Security number
Current mailing address
Email address
Bank account number, type and routing number, if available
Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) if issued one by IRS earlier this year
Driver’s license or state-issued ID, if you have one
For each qualifying child: name, Social Security number or Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number and their relationship to you or your spouse
Automatic payments for filers are expected to begin next week, with payments to SS and Railroad Retirement beneficiaries to begin in the near future.
A Get My Payment tool is also expected to launch next week, allowing people to check the status of their payment, its expected deposit date or mailing date, and an option to provide direct deposit information. We will post an update here when the new tool goes live. Update 4/15/2020: The Get My Payment tool is ready.
