Where’s my refund?

I filed my tax returns. How long before my refund arrives?

IRS Refund Status

The IRS allows you to monitor the status of your federal tax refund through their Where’s My Refund? tool on their website or through the IRS2Go app.

You can check your refund status:

24 hours after e-filing
4 weeks after filing by mail

The tool has the most up to date information available. Updates are made once daily overnight.

You will need:

Social Security Number or ITIN
Your filing status
Exact whole dollar amount of expected refund

If you’ve claimed the Earned Income Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), by law your refund cannot be issued before February 15th. The IRS expects the earliest these refunds will become available in taxpayer accounts is February 28th.

Problems?

Most refunds are issued in under 21 days, but occasionally some returns require more processing time.

You should only call the IRS if it has been:

more than 21 days since e-filing
more than 6 weeks since filing by mail

or if you are directed to do so by the Where’s My Refund? tool.

CT Refund Status

Taxpayers can check the status of their Connecticut state income tax refund using the refund status option in the Taxpayer Service Center on the Department of Revenue Services website. You can also check the status 24 hours a day by calling 1-800-382-9463 or 860-297-5962 and following the prompts on the automated system. The phone system can only be used to check the status on a refund for the current tax season.

You will need:

The first Social Security Number listed on your Connecticut return
Exact whole dollar amount of expected Connecticut refund

If you e-filed your Connecticut return you can expect to receive your refund within a few business days. If you’ve filed by mail, your return can take up to 12 weeks to be processed and be available in the system.
